In May 2010, Avonsafe published a pack of resources for childcare providers to help them to raise awareness and reduce the risk of children getting scalded by hot drinks.
Hot drinks like tea and coffee cause the highest number of the most serious scalds. During 2008/09, 3,606 people were admitted to hospital in England following a scald from water or steam, and of these 1,772 were from contact with hot drinks. Many thousands more will have been treated at emergency departments but not admitted to a hospital bed.
