NEWS & VIEWS

Do you have news about your organisation that you would like to share with others? Feel free to send short items (up to 100 words) to the bulletin editor for possible inclusion at artsbulletin@bathnes.gov.uk

1. The Quest project 2012

The Quest project celebrates Bath and North East Somerset communities in 2012 - the Olympic and Paralympic year. The project website www.myquestbathnes.org.uk will launch on Monday 21 May to coincide with the arrival in Bath of the Olympic Torch on the following day.

Groups and individuals can “Join the Quest” by featuring local projects on the website or pledging to undertake their own “Quest challenge” to make a difference in their area.

This is your opportunity to co-create a unique “2012 People’s Archive”. Using the theme of a journey or quest, the website will explore, showcase and celebrate our heritage, talent and “treasures” - the people and places that make us who we are and make us proud. For example:

  • As part of the Archive you can share photos and stories of May 22nd – your experience of the once-in-a-lifetime Olympic Torch arrival.
  • 100 children from St Andrews, Oldfield Junior and St John’s Catholic Primary Schools have marked the 25 year anniversary of Bath’s World Heritage Site status by making their very own aerial “art attack” using the World Heritage Symbol on the Royal Crescent Lawn. The Quest organising team filmed the day, to feature as part of the Archive. Each child also created his/her own logo representing the places and things they most treasure. Caroline Kay, Chief Executive of the Bath Preservation Trust, said:

It is great to see young people taking an active interest in the heritage that is all around them and working together to mark this important anniversary.

  • On 7 April Twerton Heritage Day had a fantastic turn-out, where local people explored their memories of Twerton and shared photos of the Bath Blitz. This event was supported by the Quest project team, along with the Time Bank “In Your Shoes” project (a project part funded by an Arts Micro Grant - supporting Cultural Olympiad activities for 2012). www.inyourshoes.timebankplus.co.uk

If you have any ideas or projects to share, visit the new website or email Kate_Orchard@bathnes.gov.uk or Ruth_Coleman@bathnes.gov.uk

2. B&NES Carnival community arts project

Residents of Bath and North East Somerset can take part in a unique carnival project throughout July and August to celebrate the Olympics and Paralympics. B&NES Council is working with experienced carnival producers ArtReach to run sessions for children and families - creating a special opportunity to get involved in making costumes and masks and learning samba-style drumming and dances.

The project will celebrate the finale of the London 2012 Olympic Games in August, when London hands over the Olympic Torch to Rio de Janeiro for 2016. It will also be part of the Paralympic Flame Celebration with a Brazilian-themed procession - Rio Carnival Quest - on the August bank holiday weekend.

To register your interest in getting involved email riocarnivalquest@artreach.biz

3. New Director of Bath International Music Festival

Bath Festivals is delighted to announce the appointment of Alasdair Nicolson as Artistic Director of Bath International Music Festival. He will succeed Joanna MacGregor, who delivers her seventh and final festival in 2012.

5. Mission Theatre premises development

Bath’s Mission Theatre has spent the last six months fundraising and planning for an extension to its existing backstage facilities. The Old Bakery - to be known as The Capsule - is at the rear of the main space: it now houses two spacious, warm and light dressing rooms and/or small rehearsal rooms.

The Capsule allows new backstage access between Stage Left and Stage Right. It has also provided an extra fire exit for members of the public which has increased audience capacity by 50%.  A new heating and cooling system has been installed throughout the theatre.

Artistic Director Ann Garner says:

Everyone agrees that all these improvements will be of huge benefit to the performers, artists, musicians, youth groups, companies and audience members who come to The Mission.

There is an Open Day on Saturday 12 May (Noon to 4pm) to take a tour through the new building and see The Capsule for yourself. If you plan to attend email nextstagebath@aol.com

6. Jam Jars wanted for Bath International Music Festival

Bath International Music Festival (30 May - 10 June) includes an event at St Michael’s Without Church entitled ‘On the Edge of Life: Labyrinth of Candles’.  It focuses on the issues of homelessness and rootlessness in Bath - described as ‘A uniquely moving installation’.

The project is being developed in close collaboration with local charity Genesis Trust, working with participants to create a beautiful space in the church, supported by specially commissioned music, a maze of 2,000 candles and audio posts narrating the life stories of the homeless. Each evening the choir of Bath Spa University will perform Jesus’ Blood Never Failed Me Yet (Gavin Bryars) in the candlelit church.

Organisers are aiming to collect 2,000 glass jars to contain the candles and need your help: ‘Over the next few months we would be grateful if you could save your jars from the recycling and keep them for this installation.’

Jars are being gathered at Bath Box Office (Bath Visitor Information Centre, Abbey Churchyard, BA1 1LY). Alternatively contact Sarah Jones (01225 462231 / sarah.jones@bathfestivals.org.uk) and they can be collected.

8. Government changes to tax relief - and the impact on charity donations

The Chief Secretary to the Treasury has said that Government will maintain its plan to cap tax relief on charitable donations. Danny Alexander told the BBC there were very good reasons for the cap, in order to ensure that the very wealthy were contributing to the exchequer. (BBC website 12 April)

 www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-17686062

The Chief Executive of the National Council for Voluntary Organisations has said:

The cap on tax relief is already damaging philanthropy. The confirmation from the Treasury today that measures relating to social investment will also be included in the cap could do untold damage to the emerging social investment market. This runs contrary to the establishment of Big Society Capital and all of the Government’s aspirations to promote social enterprise. (NCVO website 20 April)

Mayfest once again transforms Bristol into a theatrical playground with a surprising and varied menu of local, national and international theatre across the city. TRAINING

1.  An Overview of the Equalities Act 2010

Thursday 3 May, 6.30 - 7.30pm. Free - but booking is required
At The Education Studio, Natural Theatre Company, Widcombe Institute, Widcombe Hill, Bath BA2 6AA

Presented by Louise Murphy (Equality and Diversity Officer) and
Samantha Jones (Corporate Policy Manager: Equalities) – both of B&NES Council

The Equalities Act 2010
This came into force between October 2010 and April 2011. It replaced all previous equality legislation (such as the Race Relations Act, Disability Discrimination Act and Sex Discrimination Act) with a single piece of legislation - in order to make the law simpler and to remove inconsistencies.

The purpose of this session
To show how this change in the law affects your organisation. It will highlight key issues for those who provide services to the public and for managers with responsibilities for staffing.

Who the training is for
This session is for voluntary sector groups and organisations, particularly those working in the arts & related fields (e.g. museums/heritage). It will be particularly relevant to anyone who has not received an update on equalities legislation in the past 18 months. Attendance at this session is mandatory for Key Strategic Organisations funded by Bath & North East Somerset Council.

The session will include an overview of:

  • People who are protected by the Equality Act - the nine new ‘protected characteristics’ which cannot be used as a reason to treat people unfairly.
  • What conduct is prohibited (ie. Discrimination; failure to make reasonable adjustments; harassment; victimisation)

Booking
This session is free to voluntary organisations in B&NES and to members of the Cultural Forum for the Bath Area. Booking in advance is required. Places are limited and will be allocated on a first come first served basis.

To request a place email Peter Salt, Arts Development Officer, Bath & North East Somerset Council: peter_salt@bathnes.gov.uk
