Councillor Paul Crossley and traders

Additional free parking at The Labbott car park will be introduced by Bath & North East Somerset Council to Keynsham for the period of the town centre regeneration.

  • Around 30 spaces will be made into a 2 hour free car park upon collection of a ticket from the machine with no return for 4 hours. Restrictions will apply Monday to Saturday 8am – 6pm;
  • Two extra disabled bays and two family bays will be created. Permits will no longer be valid in this section to enable a regular turnover of vehicles in the car park. The other section will continue to be long stay parking.

Because mandatory legal processes must be followed and the changes must be advertised, the Council is targeting early August 2013 to start the extra free parking.

Councillor Paul Crossley (Lib-Dem, Southdown), Leader of Council, said, “I’ve been listening to local traders who have been telling me what will make a difference to them during this difficult period whilst the town centre regeneration takes place. The Council has responded with action. Extra free spaces are already available in Ashton Way car park, better signage is in place directing people to Temple Street shops, and we will now start the ball rolling to introduce free parking in The Labbott from August for the period of the construction. This will be followed by the Civic Centre car park re-opening in September with two floors available to the public.”

Lynn Young, Chair of Keynsham Chamber of Commerce, said, “Keynsham businesses will be very pleased that the Council have listened to us after our long-term campaign for additional free parking. The Chamber is looking forward to continuing to work with the Council to ensure that the impact of the construction is reduced as much as possible for the benefit of traders and local people.”

The Council is open to ideas from traders and members of the public about how to reduce the impact from constructing the £34 million regeneration project that will provide new shops, a new library and One Stop Shop, new community space, improved public realm, and environmentally sustainable Council offices.
