SHINE (Self Help Independence Nutrition and Exercise) is a free, 11 week program for young people aged 10-17 who are above average weight. The program is based on a holistic approach to achieving a healthy weight, therefore it focuses on increasing the young people’s nutritional knowledge, on improving the young people’s emotional health and wellbeing and by providing a range of physical activity opportunities.

During the program we increase talk about nutritional topics such as food portions, label reading, give the young people chance to cook some healthy food and we talk about the importance of being active. We have sessions about body image, behaviour and stress. In addition to the workshops we have physical activity for an hour at each session, which provides opportunity to try new activities, such as street surfing – a mixture of skateboarding, snowboarding and surfing, tchoukball- an invasion game that uses reaction nets to score in, as well as more well-known sports such as, dance, dodge ball and a climbing wall. After the program runs for 11 weeks there is a further maintenance phase, which is just the physical activity element for an hour each week, which helps the children stay active.
