Bath & North East Somerset Council - Hazardous & Toxic Waste

Hazardous & Toxic Waste

Hazardous materials such as household and garden chemicals and paints from your home should be taken to any of our 3 Recycling Centres.  Please ask one of the site attendants for assistance on where to put them.

Hazardous Waste Regulations

From July 2005, many everyday items are now classed as Hazardous waste under new legislation to prevent the harmful components being disposed in landfill sites.

These are the main ones you are likely to have in your home and how we can help you dispose of them safely:

Car batteries and ordinary domestic batteries

These can be collected via the Kerbside Recycling weekly Green Box service or they can be taken to any of the three Recycling Centres – please ask one of the site attendants for assistance on where to put them.

Televisions and computer monitors

These have cathode ray tubes, containing leaded glass and phosphorous.  These can be collected from your home via the Bulky Waste collection service (chargeable service) or taken to the Recycling Centres.

Please note, this does not include the modern flat screen types.

Fluorescent tubes and sodium lamps

These can be taken to the Recycling Centres.  Please ask one of the site attendants for assistance on where to put them.

Gas Bottles

Branded LPG and compressed gas cylinders and bottles may be returnable to the original manufacturer or supplier where you got them.  Unidentifiable ones should be taken to one of the Recycling Centres.

Fridges & Freezers

These have been handled separately for over two years already.  They can be collected from your home via the Fridge/freezer collection service or taken to the Recycling Centres.

Old medicines

These can be taken to your local pharmacy for identification and safe disposal.

Commercial Hazardous Waste

Please note we are unable to take commercial hazardous waste.  More information on the disposal of hazardous waste from businesses is available here.

Asbestos

Sheets of cement bonded asbestos and bonded asbestos downpipe / guttering (max 6ft x 3ft) from residential properties only may be taken to the Recycling Centres for safe disposal. Please note if a contractor has undertaken work to remove the asbestos in your home for you then they are responsible for it's safe disposal.

You will need to contact Council Connect in advance of taking asbestos waste to the Recycling Centres and book an agreed disposal time, providing at least 24 hours notice.

The sheets should not be broken or damaged in any way, please ensure sheets of asbestos cement are double wrapped before bringing to the site. Space for asbestos is limited, we can therefore only accept 3 sheets of asbestos.

Please contact Council Connect to book in to take asbestos cement to any of the following sites: -

  • Midland Road Recycling Centre, Bath, BA1 3AT
  • Pixash Lane Recycling Centre, Keynsham, BS31 1TP
  • Old Welton Recycling Centre, Radstock, BA3 2AA

We require at least 24 hours advance notification to ensure there is sufficient capacity within the sealed containers to accept asbestos cement and to improve health and safety procesures at the sites.

For further advice on dealing with asbestos, please refer to the Pollution Control - Asbestos webpage or contact the Council's Public Protection Team on telephone 01225 476914, facsimile 01225 477596, or by email public_protection@bathnes.gov.uk.
