Bath & North East Somerset Council - Recycling in Schools

Recycling in Schools

It is important that children learn about recycling from an early age so that as they grow up recycling becomes a habit.  Bath & North East Somerset council provide the following services to support schools in teaching children about waste issues such as recycling, composting and litter awareness.

We encourage schools to register for the international environmental Eco Schools Programme. This is a great way of focussing work on reducing your waste, recycling and litter as well as other environmental areas. Find out more at

www.eco-schools.org.uk and see local Council contact below.

Recycling and Waste Activities for Schools

Bath & North East Somerset Council provides a variety of activities for schools, including talks, assemblies and activities. They can also be tailored to meet the specific needs of particular schools. Different activities are available to suit primary and secondary schools. Popular activities include waste audits, green box collages, Rethink Rubbish assemblies, litter assemblies and  Zero Waste Lunches.

For more information, please go to Schools Recycling Activities.

Current Events

From time to time we offer specific events for schools such as competitions and awareness raising activities.  To find out about current events including schools, please go to Events.

Recycling and Composting Services for Schools

Schools must pay to have their refuse and recycling collected but it is much cheaper to recycle than to put it out for waste collection. We want to help you to reduce your waste and your costs, as well as to help provide an important educational message to your students and staff.

We can also provide schools with free compost bins.

To find out more about what we can offer including collection costs, please go to School Recycling and Composting Services.

Battery Collections

From 1 February 2010 new legislation came into force to encourage greater recycling of batteries within the UK. We currently only recycle 2.8% of the batteries we use in Britain.

You can put your batteries in your green recycling box at home but you may also wish to recycle batteries at your school.

If your school would like to get involved and start recycling your unwanted batteries, please contact one of the Environment Agency approved collection schemes below for further details on the collections available.

Environment Agency Battery Collection Schemes: -

The schemes listed below can offer B&NES schools free collections and a range of recycling boxes to collect batteries in within the school.
