Bath & North East Somerset Council - Recycling and Composting Services for Schools

Recycling and Composting Services for Schools

Bath & North East Somerset Council can offer the following recycling services for schools.  By recycling in school, you can cut your waste disposal bills, help protect the environment and promote recycling to the pupils.

Getting started

We offer a variety of weekly collections to help schools recycle. We charge for recycling collections but please note that it is much cheaper to recycle than send your waste to landfill. You can find details of current recycling and waste collection charges below.

  • Green box collection
This is best suited to small schools (usually small primary schools) that don't produce large amounts of material.
  • Paper collection
This collection service is best suited to schools that produce a large amount of paper. Paper can be collected in clear sacks or loose in 240 wheelie bins.
  • Cardboard collection
Small amounts can be collected packed flat in one box with a pre paid sticker, or larger amounts stored loose in 660 or 1100 litre wheeled bins.
  • Mini Recycling Centres
These are best suited to large schools (usually secondary schools) that produce a large amount of material and have external space to store the wheeled bins.

When looking to set up recycling in school, it is best to decide which members of staff are going to be responsible for the scheme and look for opportunities to involve the children.

See Contacts below for who to speak to about setting up or developing your school recycling collection.

Materials we collect

Paper

We can collect paper from all schools.  The main types of paper we collect are white office paper and envelopes.  We can also collect newspapers, magazines and junk mail. Don't worry about taking staples out of doucments or windows out of envelopes - they will come out in the recycling process.

We are unable to take paper such as sugar paper, tissue paper and brown paper (but brown paper can be collected with your cardboard).

We usually encourage children to just recycle white office quality paper in the classrooms as this is easier for them to understand and reduces the risk of contaminating the paper with types that we don't accept.

Cans and plastic packaging

We are able to offer some schools recycling facilities for cans and plastic packaging, either through the green box scheme or through the Mini Recycling Centres.  The plastic packaging we can now collect includes plastic tubs, trays, pots and bottles. These can be collected mixed with cans, as we will use a magnet to separate the cans from the plastic.

Cardboard

We can collect cardboard and brown paper for recycling from schools in either a 660 litre or 1100 litre wheeled bin.  For small amounts, we are able to collect loose cardboard packed flat into one easy to handle cardboard box, but this must have a pre-paid sticker.

Green box recycling

For schools using the green box scheme, you can put in any of the materials that you would normally put in your green recycling box at home in Bath and North East Somerset (except batteries).  For more information, please see Green Box Recycling.

Educational support

We can provide assemblies, activities and promotional materials to help the children learn more about recycling.  Assemblies are always provided when setting up a new scheme to help inform the staff and children about the new scheme.  They can also be provided at other times to reinforce or reboost an existing scheme.  Please see Contacts below if you would like some additional support.

Collection Issues

If you are having problems with your collections or are not clear what to do next, we can help you.  Common problems that we can help with include:

  • Missed collections
  • Checking your collection day
  • Ordering new boxes and bags
  • Refreshing a flagging scheme
  • End of term clear outs
  • Holiday collections
  • Confusion about the service
