Fly-tipping: why should you care?

Dumping of rubbish or ‘fly-tipping’ is harmful to the environment and potentially dangerous to people and wildlife.

It is illegal to fly-tip and anyone caught doing so is liable to prosecution, with fines of up to £50,000 or five years imprisonment.

The cost of dealing with fly-tipping falls to the taxpayer.

If you give your waste to a non-registered waste-carrier and they fly-tip your rubbish, you may be held accountable.

What constitutes fly-tipping?

Dumping anything – from a bin-bag of household waste, electrical items to a lorry-load of waste from a construction site – at a site that has no licence to accept it.

Fly-tipping can occur on private or public land including roadsides, waterways, railways or lay-bys.

How to report it?

To report illegal dumping:

  • Call 01225 39 40 41
  • Submit an online form http://www.bathnes.gov.uk/reportit/Default.aspx?category=FlyTipping
  • Request a visit from one of our Enforcement Officers if you spot frequent fly tipping incidents

  • Call the free Hotline 0800 80 70 60
Who is responsible for clearing up fly-tipped waste?

The Council is responsible for clearing up fly-tipped waste on public land.

If waste is dumped on private land it’s the responsibility of the land-owner to clean it up.

If someone is prosecuted for fly-tipping on your private land, the courts can award costs to cover the clear-up.
