Enforcement is an important part of the Council's Planning Service. The enforcement of planning law is a particularly complex aspect of planning activity. This stems from the need to strike a balance between the rights of individuals to use or alter their property in the way they wish; the need to safeguard the character and quality of neighbourhoods; and to uphold the planning policies for the local area in such a way as to protect the public interest.
If you would like us to investigate a possible breach of planning control, this should be in writing either as an email or by letter - contact details are at the foot of this page. Your complaint should include the nature of the contravention, its address and location, and any evidence available. Your complaint will be treated as confidential, but we do ask also that you supply details of your name and address, as anonymous complaints will not normally be pursued.
Information on Enforcement policy and the scheme of delegation can be found listed on the left.
