Conservation Areas are 'areas of special architectural or historic interest, the character or appearance of which it is desirable to preserve or enhance' - Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990.
There are 37 designated Conservation areas in Bath & North East Somerset. In order to protect the special character of these areas, planning permission is required for certain external works to dwellings which would not normally be required elsewhere.
If you live in a Conservation Area and are thinking about carrying out alterations to your property or work to trees, it is recommended that you first seek advice from the Council. Information can be found in our Living in a conservation area publication.
For further information please contact the Council's Planning Services on 01225 394041 or email development_control@bathnes.gov.uk, or view the guidance available on the left of this page.
Basic Conservation Area information can be found under the Environment & Planning category on the online Maps.
The Council also has a duty to periodically review the existing Conservation Areas and produce character appraisals which define the boundaries and the special interest of the areas. For more details, see Conservation Area Character Appraisals.
