Water is an essential resource and should be used carefully as, despite the common view that the British climate is very wet, some areas are experiencing severe drought.

Using water efficiently will not only conserve this natural resource, it will also save energy too. Energy is used for water extraction – pumping water from below ground or reservoirs, purification and pumping it to our homes.  Even more energy is used for its removal and treatment, otherwise known as sewage.

The average household spends up to £200 a year on energy to heat hot water. By being careful not to waste hot water, you could save money on your heating bills.

The key to water efficiency is reducing waste, not restricting use. You can reduce water wastage by making small changes to your habits and by choosing water-efficient appliances and fittings. Plus if you have a meter, saving water can save money on your water bill.

In the garden
- Collecting rain water is a great way to save water, while keeping your plants healthy. You can use it to water the garden, house plants and even wash your car. All Bath and North East Somerset residents can save money with the Council's subsidised water butts:

- Using a watering can rather than a hose pipe saves water.

- Don't over water plants, a soaking once a week is better than daily watering.

- Water in the evening or early morning when its cooler to reduce water evaporation.
