Air pollution monitoring networks commenced in the Bath and North East Somerset area during the 1960s with programmes to measure Smoke and Sulphur Dioxide from domestic chimneys and other sources.
With interest and concern over environmental pollution issues increasing significantly during the last decade, the monitoring network has become dynamic to respond to the changing public expectations and to the establishment of Domestic and European based pollution standards.
