Change for Children/ Every Child Matters, 2020 Children and Young People’s Workforce Strategy and Working Together 2010 recognise that the workforce are critical to delivering improved outcomes for children and young people. Each of the strategies outline key areas for support and development.
The 2020 Strategy sets out the vision that everyone who works with children and young people should be:
- Ambitious for every child and young person
- Excellent in their practice
- Committed to partnership and integrated working
- Respected and valued as professionals
The aim is to ensure that members of the workforce have the skills and knowledge to do the best job they possibly can to help children and young people develop and succeed across all outcomes which underpin Every Child Matters; being healthy, staying safe, enjoying and achieving, making a positive contribution and achieving economic well-being.
A key and significant development from the Workforce reform action plan has been the development and recent delivery of the Common Induction Programme for new staff either working directly with children and young people or for those who are supervising staff who work directly with children and young people. This induction is based on the Children’s Workforce Development Council’s Common Core of knowledge and skills required by our children’s workforce. The Common Induction covers 4 days of training and the content is-
Day 1 - Working in a principled and valued way and promoting equality, diversity and inclusion
Day 2 - Child and young people’s development, Attachment and understanding and managing behaviour
Day 3 - Communicating with children and young people, working in a structured way and transitions
Day 4 - Introduction to Safeguarding, Health and Safety and Integrated Working
