B&NES Catering Services was among the first group of caterers to be awarded the Soil Association’s Food For Life Partnership Caterer Mark Bronze Award, for menus that comply with the following:
- Meals contain no undesirable food additives or hydrogenated fats
- 75% of dishes are freshly prepared
- Meat meets UK welfare standards and eggs are from cage-free hens
- Menus are seasonal
- Catering staff are well trained
- No GM ingredients.
The Caterer Mark is a new award to caterers who are providing the very best in healthy, organic and locally-sourced meals.
Catering Services Manager Louise Bizley received the award from Prince Charles on behalf of the team. Louise said: “We are delighted to have received the Bronze Award and to have our efforts recognised. The Award is the result of a partnership between dedicated school meals staff, local food producers and enthusiastic schools. We are all committed to giving B&NES children the best quality healthy meals.”.
Catering Services can provide a healthy packed lunch service.
An example of a school packed lunch is pictured below. It includes fresh vegetable sticks, a fruit juice, an organic yoghurt, a freshly baked cake, and freshly made sandwiches. It will cost the same amount as a cooked lunch, £2.00. The children will have a choice of sandwich fillings: tuna, ham, cheese or egg, all including an element of salad (sweet corn, sliced tomato, lettuce etc). The packed lunch has been designed to meet the same national nutritional guidelines as the cooked meal.
