Consultation, as defined by Bath & North East Somerset, is a process by which the Council seeks and responds to the views of members of the general public including individuals and groups, who will be affected by particular policies or decisions.

Our consultation system enables you to register your interest in subjects that are important to you, as well as actually taking part in consultations and discussion groups online. It also displays the results of previous consultations and allows you to see how this information has been used.
The Council welcomes views from the public. It has arrangements in place for managing correspondence and has always welcomed statements, questions, deputations and petitions from the public at its formal meetings. Those arrangements are contained in the Council’s Constitution (Procedure Rules) and are unchanged. It also actively seeks to engage with local people through its overview and scrutiny review process.
At its recent Council meeting, the Council adopted a Petition scheme which explains the arrangements for handling petitions and sets out details for two new types of petition that can now be presented; triggering a debate at Council and holding a senior Officer to account (these are both subject to a minimum number of signatures).
Paper based petitions (not directed to a specific Member meeting) can be submitted to any service department as is currently the case and arrangements are in place for an e-petitions facility to be available to the public by the end of the year.
