Schools Parliament – 29th June 09

Summary 45 schools attended the parliament (90 children aged 6 - 11 years)

The Primary Pupil Parliament was organized by the School of Education at Bath Spa University in collaboration with B&NES Children’s Services and the Children's Society. It was held at the University’s Newton Park Campus and was attended by 45 schools (90 children aged 6 - 11 years) as well as councillors, including the Chair, Brian Chalker, and the Councillor for Children’s Services, Chris Watt, and by Ashley Ayre, Head of Children’s Services.

Each school brought 1 proposal that had been discussed and agreed in advance by their school council.

Every proposal was presented and debated in workshops run

The children voted for the 2 ideas they felt would make life better for children.

These were:

1.      Support for young carers

37 votes - 41% children

2.      Better wheelchair access to Bath Leisure Centre (small pool)

36 votes – 40% children

More detail on improving access to Bath Leisure Centre is included in Appendix 1

Appendix 1 Presentation 2 Better Access to Bath Leisure Centre What we propose?
  • Wheel-chair access
  • Separate disabled changing rooms/showers
  • Redecorate
  • Additional hoists for parts of the swimming-pool
  • Proper flooring for safety.
Why is this important?
  • Not fair for only some children to have fun. Fair for everyone. All included.
  • Does not just have to be used with school, but anytime too.
  • People can all play together.
  • Equality.
Who can do something about this?
  • The local Council.
  • We can ask for it.
  • Use a charity to raise money.
  • Bring and buy
  • Cake sale
How will we know this will make things better?
  • More people will be happy when you ask them.
  • Need to make sure everything works properly.
  • Use a comment box for people who have visited
  • Might be an increase in visitors because people might tell each-other and recommend it.
