Chairman of the Council - Cllr Rob Appleyard

Councillor Rob Appleyard (Labour) has represented Westfield Residents on Bath and North East Somerset Council since 2007.  In addition to his ward work he serves on the board of Somer Community Housing trust and the management committees of the Bath & North East Somerset Care Centre and the Bath & North East Somerset Citizens Advice Bureau and is a governor of his local primary school.

“I feel that all these organisations play a huge part in our community and are just a small part of a network of organisations, many that are supported by volunteers that make a huge difference to the lives of our residents.” 

Councillor Appleyard took early retirement from BT where he was in network provision and business improvement.   He is now part way through a foundation degree course at UWE in Housing & Neighbourhood Management.

 He is a keen Everton fan, although he was born in London before moving to this area 30 years ago.  Councillor Appleyard is a keen supporter of local art groups and aspires to be a useful artist himself.

Councillor Appleyard is looking forward to his year as Chairman of Bath and North East Somerset Council is very grateful for the support his family has given him with his work in the local community and the continuing support they will provide during his year as Chairman.

The Chairman often hosts Civic Receptions for delegates to conferences being held in the Bath and North East Somerset Council area.  Conference organisers are invited to apply to Paula Bartlett, the Civic Secretary, for further information on (01225) 394235.

During his year of office, the Chairman is unable to use his position to influence or become involved in Council business and matters of a political nature.

Invitations to the Chairman

The Chairman welcomes invitations to visit local charities and community groups throughout the Bath and North East Somerset Council. If you would like to invite the Chairman of Bath & North East Somerset Council  to attend an event, please contact Paula Bartlett, the Civic Secretary, who arranges the Chairman’s diary. If the date is convenient, you will be issued with a protocol form to be completed.  Please give as much notice as possible, to ensure the date is available and return the protocol form as quickly as possible. 

 
Chairman's Theme and Charity Support

Chairman’s Theme and Charity Support

The Chairman’s Theme for his year in office is “People Matter” and the Chairman welcomes invitations to events relating to his theme.   Please contact the Civic Office on chairs_office@bathnes.gov.uk or telephone 01225 394235.

This theme will be reflected in the criteria for the Chairman’s Awards 2012/13 which will be launched shortly.

Councillor Appleyard has chosen three charities to support during his year in office:-

Bath & North East Somerset Care Centre, Julian House and RUH Cancer Care Campaign.

Each of these charities are undertaking large projects over the coming year.  The Chairman’s main funding event will be the Chairman’s Charity Ball in March 2013.

Awards 2012/2013

During the Chairman's year in office, Chairman's Awards will be presented in the following categories:-

Community Awards

The Chairman's Community Awards is an opportunity to recognise the work carried out within the community by volunteers across Bath and North East Somerset - some of the unsung heroes of local organisations, residents and good neighbours. 

Business Award

The Council wants to recognise those businesses which help contribute to creating a sustainable community by highlighting the valuable contribution they make to their communities in Bath and North East Somerset. 

Education Awards

Awards of £250 in two categories:-

a)  Primary and Special Schools (4-11 years)

b)  Seconday and Special Schools (11-18 years)

Sports Award . This Award will recognise the impact of Volunteers, Coaches, Teachers and Clubs upon the sporting landscape and how those individuals and organisations are a key part of increasing participation and raising the level of people's health, whilst creating sustainable communities in Bath and North East Somerset.

 Vice Chairman of the Council - Cllr Neil Butters

Councillor Neil Butters (Liberal Democrat) has represented the Bathavon South residents on Bath & North East Somerset Council since 2007. 

Neil has had a life-long love of railways, and has worked for them – apart from when a student and on various secondments since 1966.  In 1970 he became a Traffic Management Trainee in BR’s West of England Division, based at Bristol.  He moved to Swindon for his first posting thereafter, in 1972, as BR Assistant Area Manager – and has since worked in a broad range of operating, personnel, commercial, and consultancy posts.

As of summer 2011, on a voluntary basis he is also an officer of the Heritage Railway Association – and one of two Co-secretaries of a new All Party Parliamentary Group for Heritage Rail.

Councillor Butters will be supported by his wife Charlotte who he married in the Roman Baths in 2006.  He is looking forward to his year as Vice Chairman and supporting the Chairman, Councillor Rob Appleyard.
