The Sustainable Community Strategy (SCS) sets out what type of place Bath & North East Somerset should become. It deals with a range of challenges and changes that impact on our daily lives. The strategy sets out the challenges but also how they are going to be addressed. It is aspirational and high level, but these aspirations will be worked towards to make them a reality.
The strategy is the outcome of listening to what is important for the community and responding with a vision for the area.
Climate Change - Changing weather, rising energy costs and the need to lead a lower carbon lifestyle. |
Demographic Change - The local population is increasing and there will be more elderly members of our communities. |
Growth - Housing and employment needs are likely to increase and growth will be required. This growth must be sustainable with the necessary supporting infrastructure in place |
Inequalities - There are notable life expectancy gaps in the area that need to be addressed. |
Locality - There is a need to provide local accessible services and to enable more local food production and sustainable local energy production. |
The Economy - The economic downturn means there are pressures on how we provide services. We will be reviewing how we provide services and looking at ways of increasing the level of joint working between areas and partner agencies. |
2026 seems a long time away; why plan so far ahead?
The strategy is just the starting point for building a better place to live and work. The strategy will give us direction for the future. We plan to regularly review the strategy to make sure it reflects what is currently happening in the area.
An evidence base for The Sustainable Community Strategy was created and the strategy has been impact assessed for health, equalities and sustainability. The evidence base and impact assessments can be viewed on the related documents section. In addition a companion leaflet can also be viewed.
Sustainable Community Strategies must be drawn up by engaging local communities and involving partner organisations.
