Council Tax - Payment Difficulties

We understand that some people genuinely struggle to pay their Council Tax and we will do all we can to help them. Please contact us straight away if you are having difficulty paying and we will do our best to help you.

We are always willing to listen, and once we know that there is a problem, there are a number of ways that we might be able to help: 

  • Set up a Direct Debit: If you’ve received a Reminder Notice this is a good opportunity to set up a Direct Debit with us. Setting up a Direct Debit to pay your Council Tax ensures your payments are made on time each month.
  • Extra benefits: We can assess your circumstances to see whether you could claim Council Tax Benefit or any other benefit which will help you make the most of your current income. Council Tax Benefit reduces the amount of Council Tax that you are required to pay.
  • Council Tax discounts / reductions: We will ask you about your circumstances to see if you could claim a discount / reduction on the amount of Council Tax you have to pay. For example, if you care for someone who lives with you, or you have special facilities in your home for a disabled person, you may be entitled to a reduction.
  • Special payment arrangements: After issue of a Liability Order by the Magistrate, we will take into account the amount of money you earn and the bills you have to pay, and make a special payment arrangement based on what you can afford to pay.  For example, we may agree to spread your payments over 12 months instead of 10, or we could set your payment schedule to make it easier for you to budget for your Council Tax payments.
