The Youth Offending team works with young people between the ages of 10 and 17 in the Bath and North East Somerset area who have been referred by their contact with the police and court system. We can work with young people who present a level of risk of harm to others and those who may be or have been victims of offences or abusive behaviour themselves. We have a standard assessment tool – Asset – which is used by all YOTs in England and Wales. The YOT and Childrens’ Fund jointly run the Compass Project which is a voluntary service for 8-13 year old who are assessed to be at risk of offending. This project uses the Onset assessment tool.
Bath and North East Somerset Youth Offending team work within the local LSCB framework. The YOT Service Manager is on the LSCB and the Practice Manager is in the LSCB Management Training Group. Two Social Workers are placed in the YOT and will take a lead role in working with young people who may be at particular risk and may already be clients of Social Services.
All staff are expected to complete the local LSCB Child Protection training at a level appropriate to their role, training and responsibility within the team. In turn, Line Managers will be vigilant to monitor concerns within supervision. At all times, managers must be committed to share any concern directly with the Referral and Assessment team and we take the view that any worries about CP must be passed on as soon as they are raised.
