BeaconStatus

In December 1999 Bath & North East Somerset was awarded  ‘Beacon Council’ status in the category 'Sustainable Development - Dealing with Waste'.   We were one of a select group of local authorities held up to the nation as an example of excellence and good practice.  The Beacon scheme was devised by the Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions so that all Councils could learn from the best, and from one another.

The award  was  the culmination of a rigorous competitive process that drew 269 bids from councils all over the country.   As well as showing excellence in the service category applied for, Beacon Councils have to show all-round good performance on issues such as performance management and community engagement.  We were particularly commended on partnership working within our waste services, and on the high levels of recycling that  the district has achieved.

Beacon Council status is  awarded for an 18 month period.  Our award came to an end in April 2001, when new Beacons came on stream nationally for other service categories.  During that period we hosted many events, including a highly-successful National Roadshow, Open Days and Open Houses, which were designed to spread the Council's "Good Practice".

Planning Guidance

The Council's Waste Services department has put together this guidance in consultation with the Planning Services and other relevant departments to assist in the implementation of policy WM4 of the Bath and North East Somerset Local Plan.

This guidance has been developed to ensure new buildings are designed with facilities which enable waste to be efficiently and effectively segregated for recycling, stored and collected in a manner which is suitable to all parties involved. This guidance should be referred to from the earliest stages of building design, as adequate storage facilities and good access for collection crews and vehicles can be difficult to retrofit at the later stages of design.
