You can now check product packaging for simple information about whether it can be recycled or not. Leading retailers including Marks & Spencer, Tesco, Waitrose, Co-op, Asda and Sainsburys have joined forces to introduce the labelling system which will mean that you can see, at a glance, which packaging you can recycle by looking at the symbols printed on some product ranges. Many household brands are now using using the new labelling system across their products as well.
The scheme helps to provide clearer information to the public, clarifying what can and cannot be recycled currently. Product ranges included in the scheme feature one or more of three standard symbols showing whether each component of its packaging is ‘widely recycled’, ‘not currently recycled’ or only recycled in some areas, where the instruction is to ‘check local recycling’
This scheme is run by the British Retail Consortium and is based on the proportion of local authorities providing some recycling or composting facilities for that material. Most of the materials that are described as 'widely recycled' can be recycled in your green recycling box or blue bag with one main exception:
Drinks Cartons (Tetrapaks)
We have 5 recycling banks across Bath and North East Somerset where you can take these for recycling (The Co-op and Pixash Lane Recycling Centre at Keynsham, Morrisons at Bath, Tesco and Radco at Norton Radstock). Please DO NOT put them out in your green box or your composting collection.
