With spring on it's way and many people venturing out into the garden, now is the perfect time to think about getting a compost bin or water butt. The Council is working with Straight Plc to offer subsidised compost bins and water butts to residents of Bath and North East Somerset, starting from £13.50 (plus £5 delivery).

Composting at home is the best way to deal with your garden waste and uncooked kitchen scraps such as fruit and vegetable peelings. It reduces the amount of waste that goes to landfill and provides a useful soil improver that you can use back on your garden.
Waste saving tips for your garden
Now is a good time to look at other ways that you can reduce the amount of garden waste you produce. For example, start weeding now, while the weeds are still small, rather than leaving them until they've grown big. When mowing the lawn, try leaving the cuttings on the lawn. They should be barely noticeable after a couple of days and will help to return nutrients to the soil.
Gardens provide lots of opportunities for reusing things. Many unwanted items can make ingenious plants pots including old boots, tyres and pots. Plastic bottles can be used as cloches or you can cut them up and use them as plant labels.
Other waste saving tips for your garden include sharing tools with friends and neighbours and swapping seeds and cuttings if you have too many.
