HRH The Duke of Kent
Royal Opening for Writhlington School

Bath & North East Somerset Council’s new top class facilities at Writhlington School near Radstock were officially opened by His Royal Highness the Duke of Kent on 25th May.

Almost all of the school buildings have been rebuilt and the school has already been praised for its modern, innovative and green design.

The Council’s contractors Kier Western finished the brand new school at Writhlington in April, on time and to budget. The school now benefits from a modern 400-seat theatre, a business-and-enterprise learning zone and state of the art IT facilities.

Sustainability is an important feature of the new school, with rooms naturally ventilated, and heating and hot water provided by biomass boilers. The development also includes new greenhouses with different climatic conditions as part of the school's nationally famous orchid project.

The final touch will be Writhlington’s £3.5 million Applied Learning Centre for diploma students aged 14-19, due for completion in January 2011.

The Council received funding for Writhlington in 2007 from the national Building Schools for Future pathfinder programme.
