Walking Strategy
4. Targets
TARGET 1: More Walking
To increase recorded levels of walking as a percentage of all
trips in Bath & North East Somerset, to the following
levels:

TARGET 2: Fewer Casualties
To reduce the casualty rate for pedestrians to 65% of the 1997
level by the year 2005.
To reduce it to 50% of the 1997 level by 2010.
TARGET 3: More Training
To make pedestrian safety training available in all primary
schools in Bath & North East Somerset by year 2005.
To train 10% of all primary school children per annum (years
1-4) by 2005 and 25% by 2010.
TARGET 4: Reduce Car Usage
To contribute, along with other Council policies such as public
transport priority measures, to meeting the Council’s target
reduction in car journeys as a proportion of all trips.
TARGET 5: Safer Routes to School
To contribute, along with other Council policies such as
extending the number of 20 mph zones, to meeting the Council’s
target reduction in the proportion of school escort trips made in
private cars.
TARGET 6: Safer Residential Areas
To contribute, along with other Council policies, to meeting the
Council’s target for implementing pilot home zones.
TARGET 7: Better Health
To contribute, in close liaison with health promotion and other
agencies, to meeting the Area Health Authority Health Improvement
Plan’s target reductions in the incidence of diseases for which
lack of exercise is a significant contributory factor.
TARGET 8: More Resources
To ensure that all appropriate funding bids include significant
plans and schemes to benefit walking according to the provisions of
the Bath & North East Somerset Walking Strategy. The needs of
rural parts of the authority should be given equal priority with
the main towns. Where possible, capital projects which help to
encourage walking as a mode of transport should be highlighted in
the Council’s programme.
