  • Bike Week is the UK's annual promotion of cycling with the aim to get more people on their bikes to encourage fitness and fun.
  • The week also encourages people to consider cycling to work as an alternative to commuting by car and to reduce the number of unnecessary short car journeys.
  • In 2008 hundreds of cycling events took place up and down the UK!
  • In Bath and North East Somerset, the Council's Road Safety and Sports & Active Leisure teams run a number of cycling events to encourage people out of their car and to take up a healthier and greener mode of travel.
  • Previous Bike Week events in Bath and North East Somerset include: Cycling Challenges, School Challenges, Bike Breakfasts, Midsomer Madness Mountain Bike Rides, Treasure Hunts, Dr. Bike Free Cycle Safety Checks and a BMX Track Evening Event.
  • So put the Bike Week date in your diary, and check back here for specific events and their dates, which  will be posted very soon!

Jam Busting June 2009

  • Jam Busting June is the month-long commuter challenge which promotes the use of sustainable transport on the journey to work throughout the month of June.
  • Last  year’s competition saw almost 3,000 participants take part saving almost half a million car miles.
  • The competition is run by Bath & North East Somerset, Bristol City, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire Councils.
  • It is managed through a dedicated website where participants have a travel diary to complete and for every commuting journey done by a sustainable transport mode, points are awarded towards the prize draw.
  • In a joint statement the four authorities said:
"This campaign is aimed at raising awareness of sustainable transport options. If we all travelled by an alternative mode to the private car just one day a week congestion would be reduced by 20 per cent. The competition is not just for those switching transport modes, but also to reward those who already do their bit. Jam Busting June is a fun competition which should help raise awareness of transport issues and is part of a wider package of measures to help people improve their journeys."
  • Further details will be added at a later date about Jam Busting June's 2009 event.

European Mobility Week: 16th - 22nd September

  • Every year from 16 to 22 September, European Mobility Week takes place, consisting of a whole week of awareness raising events focusing on various aspects of sustainable transport in European cities.
  • The general objective of this event is to promote more sustainable means of transport for European cities including: walking, cycling, public transport and car sharing with a view to reallocate public space for a better transport efficiency.
  • Air pollution, noise, climate change, energy efficiency, safety, public health and quality of life are key issues for this campaign
  • The Car Free Day on 22nd of September is part of the whole Mobility Week.

World Car Free Day: 22nd September 2009

  • Every 22nd September, people from around the world get together in the streets to remind the world that we don't have to accept our car-dominated society.
  • It is about encouraging people to adopt sustainable forms of travel, such as walking, cycling and public transport, and not just about one day of celebration.
  • World car free day state that it is up to us, our cities, and our governments to help create permanent change to benefit pedestrians, cyclists, and other people who do not drive cars.
  • Let World Carfree Day be a showcase for just how our cities might look like, feel , and sound like without cars all year around.
