Horse Riding on cylcle/pedestrian routes

Horse riders are able to use sections of pedestrian and cycle paths during a 12-month multi-use trial which has been launched by Bath & North East Somerset Council.

The trial aims to improve safety for horse riders and road users across Bath and North East Somerset.

The following routes are included:

• The Bristol and Bath railway Path from Brassmill Lane to Avon Lane, Saltford
• The Colliers Way (NCN 24) from Whitelands Hill, Radstock to Braysdown Lane. ( Colliers Way)
•  The Colliers Way (NCN 24) from the boundary of the Radstock Regeneration site to Kilmersdon. ( Colliers Way)
• Chew Valley Lake shared use paths on the west and south east side of the lake.
• A section of the Norton Radstock Greenway.

The Council hopes that the trial will promote and enhance the network of routes that are accessible and safe for horse riders. The idea was recommended by the Council’s Planning, Transportation, Economy and Sustainability (PTES) Overview and Scrutiny Panel. This was a result of a draft Horse Riding Strategy originally prepared by Council officers in January 2004 ( Strategy for Horse Riding (Draft)). The aims of the Strategy were to enhance, promote and enlarge the network of routes accessible and safe for horse riders.

Use of the paths will be monitored throughout the trial and comments from users will be recorded and reported to the PTES Overview and Scrutiny Panel next year.
