A4 Saltford Closure - Public Transport and Alternative Travel Information

Latest News - Please be advised that the A4 at Saltford was re-opened to all traffic on Thursday 14th September 2006

Overview of road works

The A4 between Broadmead roundabout in Keynsham and the Globe roundabout at the A39 junction is to have extensive maintenance works undertaken this summer. The works involve the reconstruction of drainage, carriageway reconstruction and resurfacing.

This road is not the responsibility of this authority. The works are being undertaken by InterRoute working for the Highways Agency.

During the works, which are expected to start on July 17th and last for up to 9 weeks, the A4 will be closed to through traffic which will have to use alternative routes. Access will be available to all properties in Saltford and bus services will still operate through Saltford during the week.

InterRoute are responsible for the works. Please contact them on 0845 7 50 40 30 or visit the Highways Agency webpage.

Changes to bus services during the A4 road closure period

On Mondays to Fridays, all bus services will run as normal. Bus services have an exemption from the road closure Mondays to Fridays, and will operate regular routes and regular timetables. There may be some delays caused by the road works.

On most weekends during the period of the road works, buses will not be able to get through the road closure and will divert between 'The Globe' pub roundabout and Keynsham (where the buses will rejoin their regular routes) via the A39, 'Two-headed Man Junction'  and the B3116. The diverted bus services will continue to operate to their normal timetables although there may be some delays caused by the diversion.

Shuttle Bus Service to link Saltford and Keynsham

A shuttle bus service will be provided to link Saltford with Keynsham. This will allow Saltford bus passengers to link up at Keynsham with the diverted bus services, enabling onward travel to Bristol, Bath and other destinations.

The shuttle bus service will be operated by First and will run every half an hour on the affected weekends of the road works. On both Saturdays and Sundays the shuttle bus service will operate from the time of the first bus of the day to the time of the last bus of the day. The bus will serve all the bus stops on the A4 in Saltford except where the location of the road works on a particular weekend makes this impossible. InterRoute have notified us of their intention to produce a weekly newsletter for Saltford residents. In addition to general updates on the progress of the works, the newsletter will include the latest information on the shuttle bus service, with particular regard to how the service will be affected on the forthcoming weekend.

Residents of Saltford who use the 665 bus service should note that on Saturdays the service will not serve Saltford. Passengers are advised to use the shuttle bus service for journeys from Saltford to Keynsham.

Further timetable information on the shuttle bus service can be obtained from First on 0845 606 4446 or by visiting their website at http://www.firstgroup.com/ukbus/southwest/somerset/home/

Park & Ride

Bath & North East Somerset Council's Park & Ride services are operating as normal during the entire period of the A4 road closure, including the Newbridge Park & Ride service. To find out more about Park & Ride please view our Park & Ride pages.

Travelling by train

Why not leave the car at home and travel by train between Bristol and Bath during the A4 Saltford road closure period?

First Great Western have informed us that their trains will be running largely as normal throughout the summer. There are no major work schemes planned for the rails in this area during the summer, but there is the odd weekend when rail services between Bath and Bristol will be disrupted due to minor works. Please note that speed restrictions may be imposed during periods of high temperature.

For further information on travelling by train, and to check any disruptions to train services, please contact National Rail enquiries on 08457 48 49 50 or visit First Great Western's website at  http://www.firstgreatwestern.co.uk

Car sharing

You may wish to car share during the duration of the closure to reduce traffic on the associated roads. To find out if anyone is going your way please register with 2carshare.com, the free car sharing website delivered in partnership by Bath & North East Somerset, Bristol City, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire Councils.

Cyclist and Pedestrian Access

Pedestrian access to and through Saltford will be maintained by InterRoute for the duration of the works.

Cyclists will be able to cycle through most of the closed section of the A4 at Saltford but must take care when approaching the sites where work is taking place and be prepared to dismount and walk where necessary.

Cyclists should be aware that certain approach roads to Saltford are subject to restrictions during the A4 closure period, and that the Avon Cycle Way is subject to a diversion as a result. Cyclists are invited to view the 'Diversion of Avon Cycle Way' map, and the 'Restrictions During A4 Closure' map, that are available as downloadable attachments at the top right hand column of this page.
