Grass Cutting and Grass Verges
Open spaces and grass/verge cutting inside 30mph
limits
Verges inside 30mph limits are cut more frequently than those
outside these limits. For queries which relate to the cutting and
maintenance of open spaces and verges near to property, contact the
Parks and Open Spaces team on 01225 477010.
Grass/verge cutting outside 30mph
limits
The control of growth on the highway verge is necessary for
safety and environmental reasons such as maintaining visibility for
highway users; minimising the risk of fire; controlling
brushwood/scrub and harmful weeds; providing a refuge for
pedestrians/equestrians where no footway exists.
Cutting is limited to achieving these objectives whilst not
jeopardising the interests of wildlife.
Cutting typically takes place 2-3 times per year depending
on growth rates.
Note - Some verges inside 30mph limits may be managed in
the same way as verges outside 30mph limits.
Roadside Nature Reserves
Roadside Nature Reserves identify and manage roadside
verges more sympathetically for wildlife. Eleven verges have
been identified and designated as roadside nature reserves.
These verges have been surveyed and the biodiversity of the verge
will be monitored to assess the success of the management
changes.
Report-it: If you would like to
report overgrown grass verges please contact Council Connect via
