Roads, Highways and Pavements
The Highways Management Service of Bath & North East
Somerset looks after adopted highways, public rights of way and
much of the infrastructure on them such as street lighting, traffic
signals, signs and bridges. The prime duty of the Council, as
Highway Authority, is to reasonably maintain and repair the highway
and ensure it is kept free from obstructions.
For further information on the Highways Management Service
Charter please see:
Service Charter.
The Council is responsible for the maintenance of some 1150km of
adopted highway and 900km of Public Rights of Way within
its boundaries. In addition to maintaining the existing
infrastucture we also spend around £5m per year in developing the
network to improve safety, accessibility, and to ease
congestion.
