Home Zones

What is a Home Zone?

Home Zones are residential streets where people and vehicles share the road space safely and on equal terms. Quality of life takes precedence over vehicle movements.

Home Zones are relatively new to the UK, although they have been commonplace in some European countries for a number of years. They are designed to enhance community life by making it possible for adults to socialise or children to play without the fear of traffic.

However, the concept is wider than just traffic improvement and aims to include a better looking street environment and an improved feeling of comfort and safety for pedestrians. Subject to the residents support the street could become an extension of the front garden but with vehicular access maintained.

Are There Any Home Zones in This Area?

One Home Zone exists in Bath and North East Somerset at Albert and Frederick Avenues, Peasedown St John.

The Future

In the future the Council hopes to fund further Home Zones. A format for deciding which streets would be suitable is currently being developed.
