Child Pedestrian Training

Child walking to school

Introduction

The United Kingdom has one of the worst records for child pedestrian deaths and injury in Europe. At the same time, children's freedom to travel independently has been greatly reduced. Far more children walked to school in the past than do so today. The same applies to other leisure and social activities.

The consequences of this situation are:

  • Higher traffic volumes create more danger for those children who are walking
  • Children's health and fitness is affected. Walking provides children with the foundation for a healthier lifestyle
  • Loss of independence has important consequences for children's social development
  • Children who are driven everywhere are unable to develop the road safety skills they will need when they finally acquire independence

What We Are Doing

At present the Child Pedestrian Training Scheme is currently being updated and will be available hopefully to be delivered across Bath & North East Somerset schools from the beginning of Term 3.

If you have any queries please contact the Traffic & Safety Team.
