W-Day is Coming to WoolLard! (The day when all properties
within the village get a new address)
W-Day will be coming to the village of Woollard later this
summer. This is the day when all properties within the village get
a new address.
For some time, people in Woollard have had trouble being found
by delivery lorries or emergency services. Few of the postal
addresses have a street name, and most have the village name of
Pensford included, which is misleading. Furthermore, the village
straddles two parishes - Publow and Compton Dando, which lead to it
being split in two in the Council’s own Local Land & Property
Gazetteer.
Under the 1925 Public Health Act, addressing is the
responsibility of the local Council, not Royal Mail. The Council’s
Street Naming and Numbering Officer, Lyn Parfitt, has been working
with Publow and Compton Dando Parish Councils to get local feedback
about the best solution, and to ensure that the new street names
command local support.
The new addresses for all properties in Woollard will now
include the street name. New street nameplates will also be
installed to make this clear to visitors arriving in the
village.
Pensford will be dropped from the addresses, so that Woollard is
a village in its own right. When consultation is complete, a day
will be fixed for the new addresses to be adopted – Woollard Day or
W-Day. Everyone affected will receive formal notification of their
new address in advance of W-Day, and emergency services will also
be informed.
The Council’s GIS team have been working behind the scenes to
make everyone in Bath & North East Somerset aware of the change
so that all departments will update their address databases. This
is to ensure that there is no confusion between the old and new
addresses.
