Street Parking - Controlled Parking Zones (CPZ's)

Controlled Parking Zone Sign

General Information

  • A Controlled Parking Zone (CPZ) is an area where all on-street parking is controlled, parking is only permitted in designated parking bays and that the remainder of the kerbside space is subject to yellow line restrictions.
  • A Controlled Parking Zone (CPZ) requires a Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) to be created. This is the legal order which defines the extent of the restrictions. More about the TRO procedure
  • Controlled parking zones (CPZ's) are designed to free up parking spaces for local residents by deterring commuters, and other motorists who wish to leave their cars in busy urban areas.
  • Controlled Parking Zones are clearly marked with entry and exit signs.  Please note however that some restrictions, such as yellow line waiting restrictions, may apply outside controlled parking zones.
  • Please note that the number within a black box on permit holders parking signs corresponds to the permit zone number.
  • There are Controlled Parking Zones in both Bath and Keynsham.

Operating Times

  • CPZ's operate 8am till 6pm Monday to Saturday only. Within these zones there are limited waiting areas.
  • Outside of these times permits are not required and visitors are not required to pay to park. You should always check the signs displayed and not assume what times the parking controls operate.
  • Sometimes, yellow line restrictions within our CPZ operate for longer than the controlled hours and, if this is the case, there will be signs on the kerb or pavement giving the hours of restriction.
  • The only exception to this is double yellow line restrictions, which always operate "at any time" (24 hours a day, seven days a week) and do not require a sign plate to indicate when they are in force.

Trade Vehicles

  • Many plumbers, electricians etc. pay to park their vehicles in a Pay and Display bay whilst carrying out work in the controlled zone.
  • Others use Resident Visitor permits supplied by the resident. However, most trades people find Contractor Permits, which can be purchased in advance, to be the most convenient method of parking for longer periods.
  • Contractor permits are available from Council Connect at the Guildhall.

Parking Permits

  • If you are a Resident or Business owner living/working within a Controlled Parking Zone area you may be eligible for a Parking Permit which will allow you to park in these zones.
