Street Parking - Pavements

Parking on the pavement (or grass verge) is potentially dangerous to pedestrians, causes damage and is also illegal.

In the few locations where footway parking is allowed, it is clearly indicated by signs and road markings.

Why is it a problem?

Pavements are constructed and provided for pedestrian use, not vehicles such as cars and motor bikes.

Illegally parked vehilces cost the Council thousands of pounds a year in damage to paving slabs and grass verges, and cause potentially dangerous/serious problems for blind, disabled and older people.

How can it be dangerous?

By parking a vehicle on the pavement the driver is causing an obstruction to pedestrians. In circumstances where the pedestrian cannot use the pavement because the obstruction is too great they may be forced to cross onto the highway and oncoming traffic, thus put themselves in danger. Simularly damage to pavement slabs can cause trip hazards for pedestrians.

How can I report damage?

To report damaged paving, kerb stones or verge please contact our highway maintenance team via the details given at the bottom of the page.

If you happen to witness someone causing this damage please report the vehicle details and we will seek to recover the full costs of repair from the vehicle owner.
