Helping you to recycle more paper and card

Photo Opportunity: The waste campaigns team and Elaine Giles from Keynsham Town Council will be available for a photo opportunity/interview at Keynsham Town Council, Temple Street, Keynsham, with the exhibition, postcards and examples of paper and cardboard at 2.30pm on Thursday, 21 September.

Bath & North East Somerset Council is planning a six-month campaign to encourage local people to recycle paper and card and make the most of the recycling service.

“Many people are used to recycling newspapers and magazines through their green box,” said Cllr Gerry Curran, Executive Member for Sustainability and the Environment, “But fewer people are aware of the range of paper we collect and a lot of people get confused about what to do with their cardboard. The aim of this campaign is to help people have a clearer understanding of what we collect so they can make the most of the services we offer.”

Many people are surprised by the range of paper the Council collects. As well as newspapers and magazines, people can recycle junk mail, catalogues and directories, white envelopes, paper and receipts, greetings cards, white based wrapping paper and small amounts of shredded paper through the weekly green box recycling service, run by ECT Recycling in partnership with the Council.

Yellow Pages are also collected through the weekly green box recycling service, but they need to be kept dry and separate from the paper as they are recycled into animal bedding.

The Council provides a free fortnightly collection service for cardboard and brown paper, which is collected at the same time as garden waste and is made into compost.

People can also take their cardboard to any of the recycling centres in Bath and North East Somerset, where it will be recycled into packaging material. Paper banks are also available at these sites.

The Council plans to promote these services through a number of displays and events, beginning at Keynsham Town Council from Monday, 18 September to Sunday, 1 October and Bath Central Library from Monday, 23 October to Sunday, 12 November (further dates and locations to be confirmed). A postcard sized checklist ideal for putting on the fridge as a reminder is also available.
