Prevention of youth crime will be the focus of a day of
activities which is being organised by Bath & North East
Somerset Youth Crime Prevention Board- led by the Youth Offending
Team within the Council.
Young people engaged in crime prevention activities along with
representatives from the Council, the Police, the Children’s
Society and local businesses, schools and voluntary and support
organisations, will take part in the event on Monday, 30 June in
The Egg Theatre, Bath.
Bath & North East Somerset Council has eight priorities to
make the district an even better place to live, work and visit, two
of these are: helping people to feel safer and improving the lives
of young people.
This event will provide an opportunity for the Council to
highlight crime prevention work and for people and organisations to
share their experiences and examples of effective projects to help
develop new schemes for the future.
Councillor Vic Pritchard, Cabinet Member for Community Safety,
said: "It is very important for all of the support groups and
organisations to work together with on this issue. By working to
stop young people from getting involved in crime, Bath & North
East Somerset Council will be helping communities to feel safer and
also giving the young people themselves the chance of a better
future."
Councillor Chris Watt, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services,
said: "The more that we can do to stop young people from turning to
a life of crime the better, it is important for intervention to
happen at an early stage so that the young people have the best
possible chance of turning their lives around. I am delighted that
young people will be taking part in the event and hope that
everyone will find it a useful and positive event."
The day will include workshops, dance and drama performances by
young people, and a "speaker’s corner" session where delegates can
raise their views and promote services.
Chief Superintendent Olivia Pinkney, of Avon and Somerset
Police, said: "Young people are the victims of half of all
crime. Whilst our area enjoys low levels of crime overall, there is
always more to do. This Conference will help raise
general awareness, offer some very practical help for young people
to help them keep themselves safe and pave the way for future work
to prevent crime affecting them."
Presentations will be given by; Project 28- (substance misuse
service for young people in Bath and North East Somerset, The
Children’s Society, Mentoring Plus (an organisation that works with
young people at risk of offending by offering mentoring and
educational and social support) and the , Compass Project - a
support organisation for young people at risk of offending,
Feedback from the day will be used to create an action plan for
future youth crime prevention work.
