The winner of a Fairtrade Recipe Competition has been announced
at an event organised by Somer Valley Fairtrade Steering Group,
which includes Bath & North East Somerset Council
representatives.
Six finalists and guests attended the recent event held at Tea
and Trade Fairtrade Shop and Café in Radstock.
The competition was launched during Fairtrade fortnight (25
February to 8 March) and sponsored by Bath & North East
Somerset Council, Radstock Co-operative Society and Tea &
Trade.
Those who attended the event sampled recipes from six finalists,
the winner being Charlotte Leakey, who trades at local farmers’
markets, with her pineapple conserve. She won a hamper of Fairtrade
produce from sponsors Radstock Co-operative Society.
Chefs at Tea & Trade had been offering samples of all six
recipes entered during the week prior to the event so that
customers could vote on their favourites. Votes on the evening were
added together with those taken during the week.
The prize giving was made by: Mark Brinkworth from Radstock
Co-operative Society, Councillor Loraine Morgan-Brinkhurst of Bath
& North East Somerset Council, and Councillor Rob Appleyard
Chairman of Norton Radstock Town Council.
Cllr Morgan-Brinkhurst, past Chairman of Bath & North East
Somerset Council, said: "I was delighted to have been asked on
behalf of the Chairman of the Council to attend the event and was
extremely impressed with the imaginative recipes put forward. As a
Fairtrade campaigner myself I feel it is extremely important to
find interesting ways to promote Fairtrade."
Other finalists recipes included: spiced chocolate cake;
chocolate rice pudding; chocolate and parsnip cake; pineapple dahl
and chocolate ginger cookies.
All recipes will be published in a Fairtrade Recipe Book that
will be launched during Fairtrade Fortnight 2009.
Vicki Przytocki, Head of HR and communications from Radstock
Co-operative "We were delighted to work with the Steering Group on
a joint Fairtrade campaign. The interest we received in the
competition shows customers have a genuine interest in Fairtrade
and what it represents."
Somer Valley Fairtrade Steering Group has been working to
promote Fairtrade locally so that Midsomer Norton and Radstock can
be recognised as a Fairtrade Zone. In January, the Steering Group
submitted its application to the Fairtrade Foundation for Midsomer
Norton and Radstock and is awaiting the outcome.
