Young people from across Bath and North East Somerset were
congratulated for their initiative and enterprise by the Chairman
of Bath & North East Somerset Council, Cllr Ian Dewey.
The Chairman held a special reception (on Tuesday, 22 April) for
the young people who had won this year’s Chairman’s Business Award
and Chairman’s Education Award.
This year’s Education Award was linked to Bath & North East
Somerset Councli’s Play Policy and Strategy. The Council’s
Children’s Services also helped with judging of this award, the
emphasis was on the winners demonstrating the development of
pupil’s physical and creative skills for playing and
socialising.
The Primary category award went to Trinity Church of England
Primary School in Radstock, with Longvernal Primary School as
runner-up.
Chew Valley School won the Secondary category, with Wellsway
School, Keynsham and Beechen Cliff School, Bath, as runners-up.
The Chairman’s Business Award 2008 was won by 15 members of the
Bath Royal High School’s Young Enterprise team whose winning entry
was "Tree Huggers and Cake Lovers". The Chairman worked with the
Young Enterprise South West team of judges, made up of
representatives of several local companies, to select a winner for
this award for innovation. The Chairman took part in the final
judging event when teams from local Bath & North East Somerset
Schools also competed for the local Young Enterprise Company
Programme Awards. Other Schools taking part in the competition were
Writhlington School; St Mark's School, Bath; Three Ways School,
Bath; Norton Radstock College; Somervale School, Midsomer Norton
and Ralph Allen School, Bath.
The reception was attended by pupils and staff from the winning
schools, and Councillors, Council Officers and representatives of
Young Enterprise South West.
Each year the Chairman of the Council is invited to present
these awards and to select the criteria for nominations.
Councillor Ian Dewey, the Chairman of Bath and North East
Somerset Council, said: "I am delighted to be able to present these
Awards to young people in our area. The staff of the winning
schools for my Education Award have worked closely with their
pupils and School Councils to provide a huge range of facilities to
improve their playing and socialising. I am very impressed with the
care and understanding that has been shown in the wide provision
for our pupils.‘
"I was also very inspired by the high standard of entries for
the Young Enterprise Awards from which I selected the winners of my
Business Award. The originality of the entries and the talents
demonstrated were of a very high standard and it has been a
privilege to be part of the judging team. I wish all the entries
every success with their future careers."
