A NEW scheme has been launched in Bath & North East Somerset
to encourage children to look at books.
And well-loved children’s author Dick King Smith joined in the
launch celebrations of the national Bookstart scheme which is being
co-ordinated by locally by Bath & North East Somerset
Council.
The Council has been working in partnership with local health
professionals to bring the gift of a lifelong love of
books to every baby in the area.
Bookstart is the first, national baby book-gifting scheme in the
world. Every baby in Bath and North East Somerset will now
receive a pack at their 7-9 month development check.
Cllr Nicole O’Flaherty, Executive Member for Tourism, Leisure
& Culture said: “I am delighted Bath & North East Somerset
Council’s libraries are working in partnership with key
organisations to promote such a valuable resource.
“The Bookstart scheme will undoubtedly benefit every child and
family in the area and encourage each new generation to develop a
love of books and reading for learning, pleasure and
entertainment.”
