AN exhibition highlighting some of the achievements made as part
of an exciting research project aimed at stimulating creativity and
innovation in young children opens today in Bath.
The ‘5x5x5 =Creativity in the Early Years’ project was launched
in 2002 by Bath & North East Somerset Council’s Arts
Development Team.
This three year project has involved five local artists working
with five local schools and five cultural organisations including
the Theatre Royal Bath, the Hotbath Gallery, Travelling Light
Theatre Company and WOMAD.
The exhibition will be at the Michael Tippett Centre at Bath Spa
University College from today (Thursday June 16) to Sunday, July
10.The children’s learning stories are shared in the images and
text of the exhibitions.
Each story makes the learning visible and demonstrates how the
children were engaged in creative thinking.
The work also shows children’s enthusiastic attitudes, learning
skills, imagination and creativity.
A special seminar to which interested parties are invited to
come and listen to and share in the learning experiences of those
who took part in the project will also take place at the Michael
Tippett Centre on Friday, June 17 from 10am-4pm.
Penny Hay, Arts Education Development Officer and coordinator of
the project, said: “The past three years has been an interesting
learning journey which has benefited all those that took part –
Bath & North East Somerset Council is ‘researching children
researching the world’.
”The project, inspired by the approach of early years settings
in Reggio Emilla in northern Italy, has been pioneering and the
findings will inform future education plans by Bath & North
East Somerset Council."
