A TEACHER from Chew Magna Primary School has been awarded the
prestigious BECTA (British Educational Communications &
Technology Agency) ICT (information and communication technology)
in Practice Award 2005 (Primary Teaching category).
Tim Rylands was one of the teachers nominated for this category
and had to demonstrate a clear understanding of the role ICT
can play in teaching as well as demonstrating the links between the
use of ICT in a subject context and raising educational
standards.
Bath & North East Somerset Council nominated Tim for this
award in recognition for the way he has shared his innovative
practice at local and regional ICT events. These events have
inspired teachers and influenced practice across the region.
The ICT in Practice Awards aim to identify models of excellence
and use these to develop and promote effective practice.
The Awards allow the sharing of good practice with the wider
teaching community while rewarding individuals who demonstrate
exemplary practice in ICT.
Award winners, runners-up and short listed candidates will work
with BECTA to share their experiences and advice with other
practitioners.
Tim is an extremely gifted and inspirational teacher, with a
love of the creative potential of technology and an excellent
rapport with his pupils. The approaches he uses are innovative and
imaginative, in particular his use of games software.
Delivering via an interactive whiteboard, he edits then shows
high multimedia content computer games to stimulate discussion
between pupils in the literacy hour.
Pupils’ communication skills and motivation have been greatly
enhanced by this approach.
Tim is a firm believer that ICT is about communication more than
technology, and that planning and appropriate editing are critical
to the effective use of ICT in the classroom.
His approach is also based on evidence and evaluation, with the
school having been commended for the ‘value added’ levels it has
achieved.
