JANE Weeks, School Chef at East Harptree Primary School,
travelled to Coventry yesterday to take part in the national final
of the School Chef of the Year Competition and was declared a
runner up.
Back in January Jane beat off stiff competition from school
chefs from Bristol, Devon and Yeovil to win the South West heat of
the contest run by the Local Authority Caterers Association
(LACA).
Yesterday she faced school chefs from Cheshire, Warwickshire,
Bradford, Tayside, Carmarthenshire, Surrey and Cambridgeshire but
despite a brilliant effort, she lost out on the top title which
went to Lynne Howe from Tayside.
All competition entrants had to produce a main meal and dessert
for four people which cost just 80p per person.
The meal must be nutritionally balanced and must appeal to an
11-year-old.
Jane’s meal was called Sunshine and Showers and consisted of a
main dish imaginatively titled Bacon and Broccoli Island which
included light cheese, vegetable and bacon bake served with chilli
sticks.
This was followed by a delicious dessert called Tropical Rice
Crunch which is made up of mango rice on an oat base served with
caramel sauce.
Denise Bruton from the Council’s Commercial Services Team, said:
“We very proud of Jane. She is a brilliant school chef and the
children at East Harptree School all love her food.
“To get the national finals of this competition is a major
achievement. Well done Jane.”
