THE household batteries collected from Bath & North East
Somerset Council’s weekly green box collection are now being taken
to a brand new recycling plant – the first in the country.
G & P Batteries, the UK’s leading collector of waste
batteries, have now opened a reprocessing plant in West Bromwich
for many of the household batteries that are collected through the
green box collection.
The plant was opened on Thursday March 17 2005 and is capable of
reprocessing up to 1,500 tonnes of batteries per year.
Over 55 percent of each battery can be recycled. The inner
and outer layers are separated and the inner contents are treated
and refined. The steel, zinc and manganese metals are all
separated and recovered to be used again.
Household batteries which are thrown away risk the leakage of
dangerous chemicals and metals into the environment. In
recognition of this, from 2006, the European Battery Directive is
expected to enforce an increase in the amount of batteries recycled
in the UK.
In recognition of this, from 2006, the European Battery
Directive is expected to come in to force to increase the amount of
batteries recycled in the UK.
Household batteries are the latest addition to the range of
materials collected for recycling from your green box and the
Council are keen for everyone to recycle as much as possible
through their green boxes.
To recycle your old batteries, wait until you have collected a
few and put them in a small bag at the top of your green box.
It is important that the batteries do not get mixed up with the
other materials in your box.
