The Value of Sports Clubs

Some national facts and figures on Sports Clubs

In England:

  • There are 106,000 affiliated clubs serving 8m members
  • 5.8m sports volunteers (15% of adult population)
  • Volunteers contribute 1.2 billion hours each year to sport, equivalent to 720,000 additional full time paid workers. (Sport England research)
  • The sporting sector makes the single biggest contribution to total volunteering in England, with 26% of all volunteers citing sport as their main area of interest. (Sport England research)

Our local sports clubs provide a vital community service that is also an education service, a physical fitness service and a social service, put simply they offer one of the best local opportunities for many people to get together, get involved and have fun.

Active Leisure is keen that the contribution of these local sports clubs doesn’t get overlooked and in Bath & North East Somerset there are now over 150 sports clubs offering you a choice of activities to get fit, stay fit and succeed at your chosen level.

A club for all - finding a club

The choice of sports and activities is vast too and with over 20 types of sports there are not only opportunities to take part in the more typical sports but have you ever thought of Aikido (martial arts), diving, rowing, cycling or even long distance walking? There are also details of clubs that can cater for people with disabilities. We can supply contact details for the 150 clubs currently on our records so to find out how simple it could be to get involved in a local club call Chris Revill on 01225 396433

Club development and accreditation

Sport England have introduced a national accreditation standard that many of  the governing bodies of sport are following to ensure that their clubs are safe, effective and ‘child friendly’. For more information on Club Mark go to: http://www.sportengland.org/club_resources.htm

Club Quest – Active Leisure’s award scheme for sports clubs.

We are committed to the promotion of quality local sports clubs that can offer safe, effective and fun coaching, sporting or recreational opportunities.  In order to provide a support framework through which all clubs can improve and progress we have created the Club Quest club award scheme using our Club Quest Award scheme

Club Quest is a club accreditation and award scheme in 3 levels (Bronze, Silver, and Gold) that formally recognises and supports all sports clubs in Bath & North East Somerset regardless of their sport, size or level.  Each club is committed to quality coaching and competition programmes and maintaining a safe friendly and welcoming environment for young and older people alike.  Currently over 40 clubs have registered with the scheme with 12 clubs having achieved a Club Quest Award.

Why should clubs get involved in Club Quest?

  • To raise the clubs profile
  • To increase the clubs potential for accessing new initiatives and external funding opportunities
  • To raise standards in coaching, competition and club administration
  • To improve the recruitment and retention of your clubs ‘volunteer workforce’
  • To develop sustainable, quality opportunities for your members

How clubs can become accredited

Clubs will need to meet some entry level criteria known as ‘Access’ following which they can obtain the Club Development Pack. The pack is a comprehensive resource that provides guidance and template documents that are designed to help clubs achieve the key criteria in each of the three levels of Club quest.

Clubs working towards an Award can get step by step assistance from a member of the Active Leisure team.   Sport England also provide a volunteer support programme known as the Volunteer Investment Programme(VIP)
