Search Tips
The editor writes:
Quick search
This is a Google-style search, and is only recommended
for very simple searches. If your Quick Search is
unsuccessful, try a Guided Search. Please note:
- Results are ranked. The best matches appear at the top of
the results list.
- Quick search can only search on whole words, not fragments of
words: a search on "church" will find "church" and "churches", but
a search on "churc" will find neither.
- Words with the same root word but a different ending will be
found, as shown above.
- Otherwise, only exact spellings will be found: if
searching on "Simpson," "Sympson" will not be found.
- Only the text which appears in the main abstract is
searched, so only the first keyword for each entry can be searched:
indexed terms not in the abstract text cannot be searched.
- Entries cannot be searched for trades and
occupations, local affairs or food and drink.
- You cannot search for Editor's Choices using the Quick
Search.
- Entries cannot be searched by date.
