10 top tips to make the most of your
swimming workout!
We all know
that swimming is an ideal exercise. But how do you make the most of
your swim? Here are our top tips for swimming your way into
fitness.
-
Breathe out when your face is under water. This makes inhaling
easier when your face is out of the water and will improve your
technique and stamina.
-
Take a course of swimming lessons. Lessons are not just for people
who can’t swim. Some are designed to improve your swimming and
teach new strokes. All the pools also offer one-to-one
‘private’ lessons.
-
Start each length with a hard push off and really stretch.
-
Vary your pace. Try and avoid ‘plodding’. Do some lengths slowly,
some harder and some as fast as you can. This will burn up calories
and improve your stamina.
-
Take a break. Competitive swimmers train in ‘sets’ and so can you.
Push yourself hard for two lengths have a 20 second break and
continue. Build up your stamina by increasing the length of the
sets.
-
Set yourself goals, for example the number of lengths and the time
it takes to do them. When these are achieved set new ones.
-
Plan in advance when you want to go swimming. Then go whether you
feel like it or not. You will almost always be pleased that you
went as you leave the pool refreshed and invigorated.
-
Arrange to meet a friend at the pool. If you can find someone with
roughly the same swimming ability as yourself, even better.
-
If you’re not a confident swimmer, try aqua aerobics. It is a great
way to exercise and it is all done in shallow water. We positively
welcome beginners. And of course all the pools offer adult only
lessons for both beginners and complete non swimmers.
-
If you don’t like being seen in a swim suit, you can wear leggings
and a long sleeve t-shirt on top as long as they are not too loose
fitting. Or invest in a thin wetsuit that could also be useful on
holiday for swimming or snorkelling in the sea.
