After the success of last year, the second ‘K3 Secondary
School Games’, will take place on Friday 13th June 2008 at the
University of Bath. The event for 12 to 13 year olds promotes
the value of sport to young people and provides the chance for
local sports clubs to create links with secondary
schools.
Young people from 13 secondary schools from across Bath and
North East Somerset will compete and receive coaching in a
variety of activities including hockey, tennis,
badminton, basketball, extreme golf, orienteering, athletics,
rugby, lacrosse, fensing, cricket
and judo. Participants will also be able to take
part in a 2.5km run for the British Olympic Day.
Organised by Bath and North East Somerset’s Sport and Active
Leisure team, University of Bath Sports Development, the West of
England Sport Trust and the Oldfield School Sport Partnerships, the
event will focus on participation rather than performance
and take place at the superb facilities at the University of
Bath, Sports Training Village. The secondary schools will
select their teams from those young people who have not had a
chance to compete for their school in the past.
The K3 Secondary School Games forms part of a programme of
events that will lead up to the UK School Games which will be
held in Bath and Bristol at the end of August 2008.
Several local sports clubs will be involved with the
competitions including Lansdown Tennis Club, Team Bath Buccaneers
Hockey Club, Bath Touch Rugby Club, Bath Lacrosse, Bath
Swords, Cricket Bath and Bath Junior Basketball Club,
along with British Orienteering, the Golf Foundation and Avon
Badminton.
As part of the day, the competitors will have
the chance to take part in the Olympic Day run - one of
hundreds being held around the country. The fun run is organised
each year by Sports Department staff at the University of Bath to
celebrate the Olympic spirit and values.
The children are challenged to run a 2.5km run, with
no time limit to complete it. All runners who complete the effort
receive a free T-shirt and certificate to mark their
achievement.
