Hello and welcome to the web pages of the Council's Sport and Active Leisure Team!

The Get Active Vision

The overarching vision for Bath and North East Somerset is:

To get more people, more active, more often, leading to improved health and wellbeing and the creation of stronger, safer communities for all.

National research has shown that increased levels of physical activity will have a major positive impact on health. It:

  • can reduce the risk of major diseases, including coronary heart disease (CHD), hypertension, type 2 diabetes, chronic kidney disease and some cancers
  • can reduce the risk of stroke
  • reduces the risk of and helps manage musculoskeletal health conditions, including osteoporosis, back pain and osteoarthritis
  • reduces the risk of depression and promotes many other positive mental health benefits
  • improves physical self-perceptions and self-esteem
  • has been found to be just as effective in the treatment of mental ill health as anti-depressant drugs and psychotherapy
  • can increase functional capacities in older adults therefore preventing falls and increasing independence

From these pages you can find out information on our schemes, read our refreshed GET ACTIVE Vision, find tips on how to be more active and information about our flagship GET ACTIVE membership scheme and how to join it.

We are promoting the benefits of both walking and cycling to start you on your road to activity and are working in partnership with B&NES Primary Care Trust in order to have a co-ordinated approach to health in the Authority, along with the Council’s Environmental and Consumer Services.  We also work closely with both these agencies and Education on promoting the Healthy Schools Government initiative.
