About the Show

This established show, now in its 22nd year, is held over the May Bank Holiday weekend in the beautiful surroundings of the Royal Victoria Park. The inaugural Bath Flower Show was commissioned to celebrate the centenary of the Botanical Gardens (in 1987), a stone's throw away from the showground, and well worth a visit for its beauty and peace.

The Show’s appeal is not just to the gardener. Nobody could fail to be impressed by the quality and sheer beauty of the Floral Art Marquee display by members of the area’s Floral Art Clubs.

A varied selection of gardening sundries are available and contained within the Horticultural Sundries Marquee.  The Bath Beekeepers exhibit will attract its usual large and fascinated audience.

Chickens in Food and Farming Marquee

British Food and Farming have a marquee where you have an opportunity to buy first class British farm produce. There will be cookery demonstrations.  Local Women’s Institutes and Townswomen’s Guilds have their own marquee with competition entries and delicious home baked cakes and preserves.

Children can spend a very enjoyable and productive time in the Children’s Activity Marquee run by Bath Area Play Project and for the under 5’s and nursing mothers, there is a crèche. Food and drink is available throughout the day. Bands and dancers provide entertainment. Weather presents no problem as practically all of the Show is held under cover with parking being available close to the showground. Group discounts apply for 20 or more, payment to be made in advance.

President’s Welcome

Welcome to the Bath Spring Flower Show.  Now in its 22nd year and held in the setting of the beautiful and historic Royal Victoria Park, it’s a show for all the family, and since it’s mostly under cover, it can be enjoyed whatever the weather, and there’s car parking nearby too.  For gardeners it’s a wonderful opportunity to stock up the garden from a huge range of plants of all kinds, exhibited by top nurseries from all over the country, along with a good selection of garden sundries, and furniture too.  In the Main Marquee there are gardening lectures for you to learn more, and the Bath and North East Somerset Parks Section will be staging another of their magnificent displays, this year commemorating the centenary of the 1908 Smallholdings and Allotments Act, when all local authorities had to start providing public allotments – they’ve come a long way since then and are nowadays in great demand.

But even if you’re not into gardening itself, there’s still plenty of interest, and you’ll certainly enjoy the feast of colour in the Main Floral Marquee and the superb artistry of the displays exhibited by members of Floral Art clubs from all over the region.  There are crafts and gift exhibitors too, the fascinating and ever popular bee-keeping exhibition, food and drink to buy in the British Food and Farming Marquee, along with young animals and other activities from the Bath City Farm and Bath Organic Group, which the children will love.  And talking of children, they’ll have a marvellous time in the Junior Activity marquee, while the under fives can be safely left, after registering, in the crèche – all run by the Bath Area Play Project.

In the Competitions Marquee you can enjoy some wonderful photography, art and children’s exhibits, along with superb craftwork by ladies from Women’s Institutes and Townswomen’s Guilds from all over the region.  Their knitting category this year, the ‘Trauma Teddies’, has attracted over 300 entries, all to go to local hospitals afterwards.  In the same tent there is a well-stocked Avon Country Market (formerly the WI Market), and daily craft demonstrations.  Out in the arena, bands and dancers will entertain you while you enjoy your food and drink in the Refreshment Tent.  And if you finish your visit to the Show with a visit to the nearby Botanical Gardens, you will have had a great day out.

My thanks to all those who have contributed to the Show – The Show Committee, Sub-Committees, stewards, the sponsors, and all who have contributed in any way.  Particular thanks go to the exhibitors, whose quality exhibits have made the Show the success it has become over the years.

I hope very much that you enjoy this year’s Show.

Stan Hitt
Show President

This popular event provides children the opportunity to appreciate trees from a new perspective whilst having healthy, outdoor fun. Participants will be provided with safety equipment and be supervised by trained climbers.

The nature of this event is such that it can become challenging for many (yet is always rewarding) and at peak times patience is required by those queuing.

The Tree Explorers will be running their stall from 10.30 – 4.30 on each day of the Show.  Norton Radstock College will be manning an information stand.

COMMUNITY FARMING MARQUEE

Bath City Farm Ltd, Kelston View, Whiteway, Bath BA2 1NW.  Tel: 01225 481269.  www.bathcityfarm.org.uk

The farm will be bringing a taste of Spring with it to Bath Spring Flower Show.  Lambs, chicks and ducklings will be on show as well as the ever popular free range chickens, ducks, rare breed sheep and young goats.  There will also be a tractor derby for the under 5’s.

Bath City Farm keeps a variety of farm animals and through their work with schools and young people aims to inform and educate the pubic about the importance of keeping animals in a responsible and compassionate manner, and the health and environmental benefits of eating local, organic produce.

The SQUARE MEAL PROJECT will be launched at the Bath Spring Flower Show, where Bath Organic Group and Bath City Farm will be celebrating 'Happy Food' in the Community Farm Marquee.  Have you tasted a pea fresh off the plant?  A carrot straight from the ground?  Or a strawberry warm from the sun?  Representatives of the SQUARE MEAL PROJECT will be on hand to advise you on growing the plants that will give you those fantastic tastes – even if you don’t have a garden.   You don’t need an allotment or a big garden to grow vegetables.  Even the smallest space can become home to a container garden.  A porch, patio or balcony are just some of the places that provide ideal sites for a container garden full of fantastic vegetables.  We all know how enjoyable, rewarding and environmentally crucial it is to be able to grow your own food. So now it is up to us to help make this an exciting and valued activity for the next generation.  The idea behind the SQUARE MEAL PROJECT is to inspire and encourage young children (and their parents) to participate in growing a small amount of their own food (enough for a square meal) and to demonstrate how this can be done without the need for a big garden or any special tools or expertise.

We have devised a colourful leaflet setting out the idea of the SQUARE MEAL CHALLENGE, and simple step-by-step instructions, that hopefully children can follow for growing their own square meal ingredients in all types of containers.

However, the launch is just the beginning and will serve as a fact finding event for widening the scope of the project. We hope that this could lead on to many more Square Meal Project activities. Regular workshops for children could be held at venues such as the BOG garden, schools, peoples own gardens, etc. These of course would have to involve parents and/or teachers to supervise. If we can get enough interest who knows we might even be able to get some funding.

Bath Organic Group (BOG) and Bath City Farm will be sharing the marquee this year to promote HAPPY FOOD – meat that has been raised to high welfare standards and locally grown, organic fruit and vegetables.  There will be live demonstrations of how to create a simple vegetable garden in a container, with examples of the “here is one I did earlier” variety; a display of the types of containers that could be suitable; a display board showing a large map of the BOG plot, pictures of people “working” and relaxing at the BOG garden – including as many as we can get showing children’s activities; information leaflets about BOG and much more besides.

There will be activities for children - colouring a paper cup, planting a nasturtium in it and taking it home with them. The Parks & Green Spaces section are providing 1,500 nasturtium seedlings. While the children are occupied we can engage the adults with the Square Meal Project idea.

If you are coming to the Show please come and visit our marquee.

BATH ORGANIC GROUP OPEN DAY

Growing Green is an organic fringe event to the Spring Flower Show, held within a stone’s throw of the Showground.  Bath Organic Group’s Community Garden on Lower Common Allotments - downhill from Royal Victoria Park and follow the signs – will be open to the public on Bank Holiday Monday 5 May from 11am to 4pm.  The garden offers a haven for visitors who are looking for some relaxation after the hurly-burly of the Show.

The Community Garden, which covers 10 allotments plots, has been developed over the last fifteen years and provides an excellent insight into the benefits of organic growing.  Our philosophy is to live in harmony with nature by encouraging wildlife and replenishing the soil with organic matter.  The Garden is maintained entirely by volunteers every Saturday morning throughout the year.

Entrance to Growing Green is free and plants and refreshments will be available.  Please contact Tim on 01225 312116 for further information.

KING BLADUD’S PIGS IN BATH

One hundred individually decorated life-size pig sculptures will be displayed throughout the City of Bath this summer - to celebrate the legend of King Bladud who together with his pigs discovered our hot springs and went on to found the City of Bath.

Representatives will be present at the Show with three or four decorated pig sculptures to publicise the event and also for visitors to see the potential of the pig as a garden feature and to register early interest in the Auction scheduled on Friday 31 October.  Each pig will be sponsored.  Each sponsor will select an artist to transform the blank "3D canvas" of a pig sculpture, made of reinforced fibreglass, into a work of art.  In October the pigs will be sold via a grand auction.
